BREAST RECONSTRUCTION GENERALLY IS NOT RECOMMENDED IF YOU

  • Are planning to become pregnant, as pregnancy can affect the results and potentially require additional procedures.
  • Are currently breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed soon, as this can impact the outcome of the reconstruction.
  • Experience significant weight fluctuations, as this can alter the results and require further adjustments.
  • Have a severe or chronic illness that increases the risks associated with surgery.
  • Smoke and are unable to quit, as smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

Breast reconstruction can be considered at various stages of life, but if your breasts are not fully developed, you might need additional procedures in the future. It is advisable to evaluate future plans, such as having children, as these can influence the decision and outcome of your reconstruction.

If you plan to lose weight or make significant lifestyle changes, it might be wise to wait before opting for breast reconstruction. Weight loss can impact the size and shape of your breasts, potentially affecting the results of the surgery.

DURING THE PROCEDURE

Breast reconstruction surgery uses various methods to restore and enhance the shape and volume of the breasts after mastectomy or injury. Here are the main techniques explained simply:

  1. Flap Reconstruction:
    • Method: Uses tissue from another part of your body (e.g., abdomen or back) to reconstruct the breast.
    • Use: Ideal for creating a natural-looking breast shape with your own tissue.
    • Procedure: Tissue is relocated and shaped to match the natural contour of your breast.
  2. Implant Reconstruction:
    • Method: Involves placing a silicone or saline implant to rebuild the breast mound.
    • Use: Suitable for women seeking a quicker reconstruction option.
    • Procedure: An implant is placed under the chest muscle or skin to create breast volume.
  3. Fat Grafting:
    • Method: Involves harvesting fat from other areas of your body and injecting it into the breast area.
    • Use: Enhances breast shape and volume, often used in conjunction with implants or flap reconstruction.
    • Procedure: Fat is harvested, processed, and then injected to refine and contour the breast.
  4. Combination Approach:
    • Method: Combines flap reconstruction with implants or fat grafting.
    • Use: Offers a customized solution to achieve the desired breast shape and volume.
    • Procedure: Multiple techniques are used together to create a more natural and balanced result.

In all these methods, the surgeon may also reposition the nipple and areola to a higher, more natural-looking position. The choice of technique depends on your individual needs, the extent of reconstruction required, and your desired outcome.

THE SURGEON USUALLY:

  • Makes incisions as needed to access and reconstruct the breast area.
  • Removes excess tissue or places implants to achieve the desired breast size and shape.
  • Repositions the nipple and areola to ensure a natural and symmetrical appearance.

THE NIPPLE AND AREOLA:

  • Typically remain attached to the breast but may be repositioned or reconstructed as needed.
  • In some cases, they might be relocated as a skin graft, especially if the breasts are very large.
  • Your surgeon will aim for symmetry between the breasts, though some variation in size and shape may occur.
  • The size of the areola may be adjusted.
  • Incision scars will fade over time but may remain visible.

03

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Immediately after surgery:

  • Your breasts will be covered with a gauze dressing or bandages.
  • A tube might be placed under each arm to drain any excess blood or fluid.
  • You will likely take medication for pain and antibiotics to decrease your risk of infection.

The first few days or week after surgery:

  • Your breasts will probably feel tender and sensitive.
  • Your breasts might be swollen and bruised.
  • Your surgeon might recommend an elastic compression bra to protect the breasts.

After that:

  • You will need to limit physical activity for two to four weeks while the breasts heal.
  • Your surgeon might suggest avoiding underwire bras for a few months after surgery.
  • Scarring usually fades over time.
  • You will need a follow-up visit with your surgeon to remove stitches and check your recovery.

RESULTS

Successful breast reconstruction results in a restored, natural breast shape with improved symmetry. The procedure can enhance the contour and volume of the breasts, reposition the nipples and areolas to a more natural location, and may involve adjusting the areola size. These results often lead to a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance, significantly boosting confidence and overall satisfaction.
