DR BRUCE LELALA
As a young boy growing up in Matatiele in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Bruce Lelala always dreamt of becoming a doctor and helping those in need. Despite numerous challenges and setbacks, he managed to achieve his ambition, and in 2019, he became only the second Black South African to qualify as a Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon at the University of Cape Town, joining the small number of plastic surgeons on the continent. With a population of almost 60 million, South Africa has less than 180 plastic surgeons, placing Dr. Lelala in a unique and privileged position to serve his country. Dr. Lelala holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN), a Diploma in Anaesthetics (DA) from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA), a Postgraduate Diploma in Business administration (PDBA) from Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), a Masters in Medicine (MMed) from University of Cape Town (UCT), and a Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from CMSA. In 2019 Dr. Lelala was appointed by the USA-based NGO, Operation Smile to be part of the internationally credentialed cleft surgeons for the organization. He has been involved in cleft surgery missions in Africa and abroad. Dr. Lelala has recently undertaken a fellowship in microsurgery & oncoplastic breast surgery at one of the world’s leading institutions of reconstructive surgery in Nottingham, United Kingdom. This training has equipped Dr. Lelala with skills in microsurgery, enabling him to perform intricate and life-transforming operations, making him one of less than 15 Microsurgeons in South Africa. Dr. Lelala runs his private practice at Skimmed in Hydepark Corner and LAISA in Sandton.
